Prof. Yaseen Iqbal did his graduation in Physics from Gomal University D. I. Khan and joined the University of Azad Jammu & Kashmir as a founding faculty member. After working in various national institutions, he joined the University of Sheffield (UK) for higher education in 1993. He was such an outstanding researcher that upon completion of his PhD in Materials Science & Engineering in 1997, he was offered a number of Postdoctoral and Joint-consultant positions by Prof. William Edward Lee, Prof. H A Davies and Prof. I M Reaney. In addition to a number of important academic and applied research projects, he worked as a joint consultant for UK industry such as Lafarge Brass, Royal Dalton, Wedgewood's, Morgan Materials, Filtronics and Telcon Ltd. for more than 06 years. In 2004, the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan invited him as a Foreign Professor to work for the uplift of research standards in Pakistan. He joined the Department of Physics, University of Peshawar in 2004 and after a thorough analysis of the academic standards of the Department of Physics and the outside world, he was quick to conclude that science without application, and education and research inconsistent with local resources were the main flaws of our higher education. In spite of the 50 years long history, the Department of Physics was a teaching-only department and a single research article had not been published from its address till 2005. Keeping in view the mineral potential of the region and its possible role in economic development, Prof. Iqbal initiated a long term project of establishing a standard Materials Research Laboratory (MRL) with Rs. 1 m released to him as an initial settlement fund by HEC in 2005. His 10 years long selfless and untiring efforts attracted more than Rs.80 m for MRL. At the moment, this laboratory is not only equipped with facilities for research in mineral upgradation, base metal extraction, microwave dielectrics, cancer dosimetry and nano-science and technology but is capable of developing its own equipment for nano-fabrication and characterization; e.g. Electro-spinning units, ferroelectric kits, and seebeck coefficient measurement kit etc. These efforts increased the number of PhD scholars to 50 and MPhil scholars up to 90. Prof. Iqbal has personally supervised 06 PhD graduates with excellent remarks from international examiners and a number of MPhil scholars. At international level, Prof. Iqbal earned a Chartered Engineer Status from UK Engineering council in 2007 and Professional Engineer status from PEC  in 2013. Prof. Iqbal has published more than 60 articles in International Impact Factor Journals with an Impact Factor of above 100. His outstanding contributions of 15 ICDD Reference Cards of new crystalline phases to global database has been recognized by the International Centre for Diffraction Data, Pennsylvania, USA and are now being used in characterization of materials globally as a reference material. To introduce a true research culture, Prof. Iqbal founded the Pak. Materials Society which launched the Journal of the Pak. Materials Society to train youth in technical writing and related research skills. To ensure facilities and intellectual support for students, he signed several MoUs with a number of local and foreign institutions. He organized two full semester courses live from Boise State University, USA via video conferencing. He organized several national seminars and conferences on Academia-Industry Linkages, Processing, Properties and Applications of Materials in the host institution. Prof. Iqbal gave Invited Talks in several national and international conferences such as “EMF 2003” Cambridge University, “Where Glass Meets Ceramics”, Pilkington, 20th Nov. (2000), "Mullite 2000”, Oban (Scotland), ”Mineralogy of Ceramics Meeting”, London June 17, 1999. He worked as an active Member of National Expert Committee for Nano Science & Technology, PCST, National Curriculum Rev. Committee, Metallurgy & Material Engineering, Pakistan, Member HEC Task Force for Establishment of Engineering Universities (Germany) and Member, OIC Consultative Committee for Physics, COMSTECH. In the field of social sciences, Prof. Iqbal has published 07 books and more than 20 articles on various social and educational issues. He is considered an authority on science and education and is being invited by Voice of America, BBC and PTV time and again for expert opinion. Recently, he received R&D Effort Award from the Directorate of Science & Technology, KP and has been nominated for the Civil Award.
