Peshawar university launches FM radio service

The first ever digital FM 107 radio station of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communications of University of Peshawar formally started its transmission here on Saturday.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the campus radio station, the vice chancellor of the university, Mumtaz Gul said that campus radio station would help in disseminating information.

He announced that the radio station would be provided with a new building he sanctioned Rs 200,000 for the radio station. He also appreciated the initiative taken by the department.

The campus radio station established with the financial and technical assistance of Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) and DW, Voice of Germany, started its test transmission in October, 2003. Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) has allocated FM 107 frequency to the campus radio station.

The chairman of the department, Dr Shahjehan said that the radio station was an integral part of the Media Training and Research Centre (MTRC) of the department

Dr Shahjehan said that FM 107 radio station possesses a number of digitalizedstudios fully equipped withlatest equipment and it was the first ever radio station of the university.

He said that it was a small project but it was only the beginning. The campus radio station would initiallystart transmission for three hours i.e., from 5:00pm to 8:00pm daily. It would air educational and entertainment programmes for the community of the campus.

RadioPakistan, Pakistan Telecom and The Internews,an international media organisation, provided technical assistance for the FM 107 radio station, Dr Shahjehan said.

Mr Christoph Broomer, German ambassador said that he would make three recommendations: necessary freedom of information to report, to lecture and to entertain its listeners
