Seminar on Sectarianism in Pakistan: Causes, Remedies


Pakistan Study Centre University of Peshawar arranged a Seminar on” Sectarianism in Pakistan: Causes, remedies” on 13thApril 13, 2016.

Miss Hamida, from Institute of Management Sciences Hayatabad presented her paper on the theme. Director of the Centre Prof Dr. Fakhr-ul-Islam presided over the function.  

In her presentation, Miss Hamida gave historical background of the menace. She said that Iranian revolution, Ziaul Haq era, Afghan jihad and intolerance are the main cases responsible for spread of violent sectarianism in Pakistan. She said that sectarianism has caused many ills to Pakistan which included terrorism, intolerance, weak economy and social disorder.

Director of the Centre Prof Dr. Fakhr-ul-Islam discussed remedies for curbing sectarian violence. He said that we need to evolve the culture of tolerance in our society. He said, through good governance and flawless internal and external policies, the government can eradicate the menace. He added that all political parties and shades of opinion should evolve a national consensus that they will not allow sectarian intolerance in the country. He said that media, educational institutions and ulama can play a vital role to that end.
