Undergraduate Programme in English

About the Course:

A blend of Literature and Linguistics, the four-year Undergraduate Programme in English consists of eight semesters (136 credit hours). Through a close textual reading, we explore how different writers respond to different human issues facing a society. In order to develop a better understanding of different forms of literature produced by diverse writers from different backgrounds we focus on how, if at all, literature shapes society or vice versa. These courses also focus on how writers use language to serve their purpose and how and why those texts are relevant to our time and space. The programme also focuses on the study of the nature of human language and forms of linguistic communication. In order to understand this boarder concern of Linguistics, we examine the structural and functional properties of language. Some of these courses investigate areas such as language acquisition, the relationship between language and brain, language and society, language and power, forensic linguistics and world englishes.
