Launching Ceremony of the Environment Society (EnvSoc)

 

The ceremony was held at the Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Peshawar, on Monday 4 February 2019. The Chief Guest on the occasion was Meritorious Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences, Prof Dr Bashir Ahmad. The Guest of Honour was the Provost, Mr Saif Ullah Khan. Also present on the occasion were Prof Dr Hizbullah Khan, Chairman of the Department, and Dr Asif Khan Khattak Organiser of EnvSoc. Moreover, the Co-Organisers of EnvSoc, faculty members, students, and EnvSoc cabinet members also attended the programme.

Proceedings

Dr Shahla Nazeen (Co-Organizer of EnvSoc) was the host of the programme and started the proceedings as stage secretary. The ceremony started with recitation of Holy Quran by Mr. Atif Rahim followed by welcome words.

Welcome Remarks

Dr Asif Khan Khattak, Organiser of EnvSoc, delivered a welcome address in which he thanked the honourable Chief Guest and other dignitaries of the academia, media, and participants for their overwhelming participation. At this important juncture, he highlighted the possible dynamic and effective role of the Environment Society in a short span of time since its creation in bringing about change in the society to meet future challenges in the University of Peshawar. The formulation of this Society was regarded as a challenge for him, but he asserted to successfully launch the society in its true spirit and morality. He requested the Student Societies and academia to pledge their extensive support to the newly established Society to help them reduce the environmental problems from the University of Peshawar.

He gave a presentation to all the guests and explained the aims and objectives of the Society. He said that previously, there were 13 student societies and with the establishment of the Environment Society, the total number of societies now are 14. He emphasised on the need of EnvSoc and said that there was a need to establish this society to create awareness and promote environment friendly practices throughout the campus amongst the students. Talking of the enthusiasm that the students had shown, he highlighted the fact that EnvSoc received an overwhelming turnout for student membership and it has the highest number of members.

He then introduced all the cabinet members of the society.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

After the introduction of the cabinet members, the Chief Guest Prof Dr Bashir Ahmad was invited for the ribbon cutting ceremony for the official launch of the Environment Society. Also present on the ocassion were Prof Dr Muhammad Nafees and Prof Dr Sardar Khan.

Following dignitaries delivered speeches:

The dignitaries in their speeches admired the efforts of Dr Asif Khan Khattak to take the initiative formulate the Environment Society and congratulated him. They emphasized that no society could sustain or progress until students, the soul occupants of the university and the cabinet members, are socially empowered and encouraged to taking actions to protect the environment. They also identified the need for contributions from the various departments and media sectors in order to address the prevailing issues in the University. The respected dignitaries assured all their possible support in the successful operation of the Society and other activities of Environment Society.

Vote of Thanks

At the end, Dr. Hizbullah Khan (Chairman, Department of Environmental Sciences) thanked all the participants for their overwhelming participation and congratulated the Environment Society on its successful launch.

Plantation Drive

Dr Saeeda Yousaf congratulated the society on its successful launch and requested the Chief Guest Professor Dr Bashir Ahmad and the Chairman, Prof Dr Hizbullah Khan, to initiate the plantation drive. The planation drive had an aim to plant 50 trees in areas deprived of vegetation in the main campus identified by the students. With the collaboration of Pakistan Forest Institute, the plantation drive was commenced.

The program was then concluded.
