Fellowship Programme on Promoting Peaceful Co-existence


The Department of Philosophy, University of Peshawar, with the support of the United States Institute of Peace is announcing one-week Fellowship Programme on Promoting Peaceful Co-existence which aims to capacitate a team of 60 volunteers from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, especially erstwhile FATA and other conflict hit areas, to contribute in promoting peace, pluralism and co-existence in their respective areas. The programme will be carried out in 2 batches, each consisting of 30 fellows.

The participants will be introduced to diverse philosophical, psychological and political theories that will enable conceptual understanding about peaceful co-existence, indigenous peace movements, and risk factors that contribute to violent extremism and potential pathways to counter these risks in their day to day life and work. The project will promote critical thinking in times of conflict and the use of language and argumentation for creation of peace and understanding diversity. The proposed project is an initiative to bridge a gap through generating a dialogue between academia and practitioners.

The fellows will be given practical exposure by doing projects on peace building. The fellows  will be trained and encouraged to write case studies, papers/ articles on wide ranging topics dealing with peace and co-existence.Selected articles will be published in The Mirror of Society, (a bilingual youth magazine) published by the young writers of the University of Peshawar.

Selection Criteria

  • Fellow must be permanent resident of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, especially (Ex-Fata) merged and other conflict affected areas.
  • Selection of 50% women will be ensured in the fellowship programme.
  • The applicants must be existing and potential young Human Rights Defenders preferably NGO workers, journalists, teachers and students.  Preference shall be given to budding leaders who have contributed to and can influence positive change in their communities
  • The applicant must have a minimum 14 years of education, preference shall be given to students enrolled in the University of Peshawar
  • 50% of the fellows shall be from merged areas (Ex- FATA).
  • Age limit will be 20-30
