Peshawar University to Roll Out Online Distance Learning Programs in 2025
There was a time when those who couldn’t afford college or university expenses or couldn’t manage time due to jobs or businesses could still earn degrees from matriculation to master’s level through private enrollment. Many people even pursued double master’s degrees this way. Even now, matric and FA (Intermediate) can be completed privately. However, since the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in Islamabad replaced the annual system with the semester system, BA and MA degrees can no longer be obtained privately. HEC began phasing out BA and MA programs in 2019 and imposed a complete ban by 2024.
During this period, people turned to institutions like Allama Iqbal Open University and other similar universities that follow distance education. However, their fee structures are quite high, and students are required to attend classes at nearby schools or colleges, leading to significant time and financial costs.
Considering these challenges, HEC introduced the Open Distance Learning Policy 2024, allowing students to continue their education from home, provided they have internet access. Through this system, students can access pre-uploaded educational materials on the university’s website, preparing them for exams. The learning resources will include three formats: video lectures, audio lectures, and PowerPoint presentations, along with live lectures that students can attend via mobile phones, computers, or laptops. If a lecture is missed, students can access recorded sessions anytime through the website. Additionally, Q&A sessions will be arranged where students can interact with teachers.
At the end of the semester, exams will be conducted in two parts:
1. 30 Marks: Based on assignments given by teachers, submitted online within a deadline. Teachers will evaluate these assignments and conduct recorded Q&A sessions related to the course. The Directorate of Distance Education at Peshawar University may randomly review these assessments.
2. 70 Marks: A written exam held at designated centers in each district’s capital, ensuring students can commute daily without difficulty.
This program avoids the need for students to visit the university, allowing them to study from home or work. It is especially beneficial for women who cannot attend university due to restrictions and working professionals who wish to continue their education. It also offers significant cost savings:
- Half the tuition fee (e.g., if a program’s semester fee is PKR 30,000, distance education will charge PKR 15,000).
- No hostel expenses, which are currently very high.
- No transportation and food costs.
Peshawar University is set to launch distance education this year. Students with internet access and a mobile/laptop in their area can benefit from this program and continue their education seamlessly.
